There are sterident tablets that you should be able to by from a chemist.
The best method is really boiling your water.  You must be careful when
adding substances to water to kill off bacteria as you don't really want to
kill off your gut flora as well!  This can make you just as ill as consuming
harmful bacteria.  I'd recommend talking to you local pharmacist they should
know what to advise.  Also have a look at camping shops this is the kind of
thing that they would carry as well.
