I had read somewhere (I forget exactly where) that sharpened sticks were 
sometime used for this purpose so I carry a package of small wooden skewers 
with me. I seldom use them because I do use my fingers and as an adult I am 
not fearful of the rare occasion I need to use a knife for such a purpose. 
Bringing the food to the mouth with the fingers does not necessarily mean 
inserting your fingers in your mouth during the transference.
