Truthfully, I just used lightly mashed potatoes 'cause I don't have a ricer. 
  Now, what do I mean by "lightly" mashed.  Well, ummm.  Just sort of 
crushed and crumbled so that there weren't big chunks but not smashed and 
stirred into a cohesive paste.  Lots more stirring was involved in the 
mixing and that took care of any minor lumps of potato.
