SC - Is tarragon period?

A friend of mine who lives around Mt. Shasta, CA has agreed to use my 
rosepetal syrup recipe and try to make violet syrup from the violets that 
grow wild near her house.

My question: how do we find out if those violets are edible? I'd hate to 
poison anyone (especially me!)
