Frivolous as this might sound, I agree.

Think in terms of boiled/steamed/fried wheat paste, under the general
name dumplings.

Subsets include dumplings made from batters and doughs, both eggless and
with eggs, whole eggs or yolks.

Eggy dumplings made from batter/soft dough would include spaetzeln, some
gnocchi, various knedeln, matzoh balls, kartoffelklopse, etc.

Paste made from pressure-formed (i.e. rolled or extruded) dough would be
pasta, of which egg noodles are one type, and eggless pastas (such as a
number of Chinese noodles, plus things like spaghetti and commercial linguine).

Yeah, this is confusing, but if you look at books about pasta you'll
find that there are different categories, and according to most sources
spaetzeln, because of the soft dough/batter and the way they're formed,
would be more dumpling than noodle.

Of course there are intersecting subsets, but if it weren't confusing
where would the fun be?
