Hmmm. I don't have that much experience with competitions, as I've said,
but I'm well aware of the kinds of problems we can have with them. I see
the role of the Laurelate in the event we're doing this weekend in two
ways: we're going to talk to the exhibiting artisans about what they do
(I'm bringing a folding chair and some home brew...), and we're going to
be, to a certain extent, helping foster an atmosphere of celebrating the
arts and sciences. The particular region this is happening has had some
problems with being far from the places where Crown contendors tend to
live: for practical purposes we tend to be far from the "political
capital" of the kingdom and often don't get a lot of Royal visits. There
are people here who don't have AoA's, who've been doing fine work for
years, that sort of thing. I see it as the task of the laurels to pay
some attention to some of these people, make them feel good without
patronising them. Maybe some of these people don't have nifty scrolls
covering their walls, but maybe they'll feel good about getting a
hand-cast bronze medallion from Master So-and-So: that someone, someone
not a local or a close friend, noticed their work and thought it noteworthy.

And yes, there will probably be a lot of little beads and ribbons (I was
gonna give out grams of saffron, or comfits, but I'd rather it not be
art-specific, so I'm off to shop for semi-precious stones in a few
minutes -- call me tacky) but it's what these things represent. I'm
really hoping that some of the nonsense that sometimes occurs at
competition events doesn't happen here; and if it does we can try
something else next time. Oh, and if I find I have to be a policeman and
make sure people are helpful or at least _polite_, I'll be that. I will
not have my name and Order attached to behavior that discourages
artistic endeavor, it's that simple. That and the fact that some people
consider me large and scary-looking.

'Lainie, I'd like to talk to you about this a little more, when I can.
I'll try to write after this weekend, probably.

I, of course, am a model of restraint and humility... ; ). See above.
