What I was saying is that it is a noun plural. What we call 'grits' in the 
USA is more appropriately called 'hominy grits' as opposed to 'wheat or other 
grain grits'. Apparently the word was used in period but I seriously doubt 
that it was first used to refer generically to a maize product in 1579 CE.
