nah, its together. To me, the quintessential Monte Cristo is French toast
batter dipped egg bread slices, a slice of good ham, a slice of good
gruyere or swiss, Grilled till the bread is cooked and the cheese is all
melty. Served with a sprinkling of powdered sugar and a side of strawberry
preserves (preferrably home made) for dipping.

I've seen them deep fried, which is a bit frightening, and I've actually
seen them just on toast. ugh!

They tend to be seen in small mom and pop diners off of I5 in towns with
names like Drain, Humptulips, Boring and Enumclaw. Served by grey haired
waitresses named Flo...you get the idea :).

anyway, it always struck me as a very medieval combination, sweet and
savory, and not a little complicated to make. And I'm still looking for a
place in Seattle that serves them. So far I've only found one, and that
wonderful place closed down a couple years ago :(...(the only non-Denny's
24h restaurant in town, too. And 4 blocks from my house!!)

I now return you to your regularily scheduled medieval food discussion...
