Having tasted it, I think the saffron is for taste--and the fifteen threads
was my decision, not that of the original, which (like most period recipes)
gave no quantities.  And saffron crocus isn't hard to grow, but you don't
get much off each flower. And it was expensive in period--C. Anne Wilson
gives numbers in _Food and Drink in Britain_.
