The word appeared in English for the first time in 1565 CE. It most likely 
referred to the sweet potato rather than the Irish potato. Sweet potatoes 
were consumed within period but wide spread (or common use) of the white 
potato as human food does not seem to have started until the 1700s CE, well 
outside SCA period. They were believed to cause diseases like leprosy if 
eaten just as tomatoes were believed to be a source of cancer until the 
beginning of this century by many physicians. Someone else may have more 
specific information.
