The word appeared in English for the first time in 1565 CE. It most likely
referred to the sweet potato rather than the Irish potato. Sweet potatoes
were consumed within period but wide spread (or common use) of the white
potato as human food does not seem to have started until the 1700s CE, well
outside SCA period. They were believed to cause diseases like leprosy if
eaten just as tomatoes were believed to be a source of cancer until the
beginning of this century by many physicians. Someone else may have more
specific information.
