Stefan asked:
>So what is "eintopf"?

Literally, "one-pot meal". A stew (or soup), usually made of very
inexpensive ingredients, mostly beans, root vegetables, cabbage, barley,
perhaps some inexpensive meat (although there are some quite good versions).
In Hitler´s Germany, there was one Eintopf day each month, not each week, as
I said earlier. Described thus in A Social History of the Third Reich: "the
officially prescribed monthly Lenten fare, the saving from which accrued to
Winter Relief - did not fail to engender inward emotion: lumpy barley broth
brought lumps to diners´ throats, tramsmitting (via the taste-buds)
evocations of folk community, greatness and convivality." ... "one of the
chief ritual innovations was the monthly one-pot meal, which meant that the
bill of fare in every German household was reduced to just one course; all
the money thus saved was to be donated to the Winter Relief."
