More to the point, since most of us can't produce the proper characters
needed to portray such terms with any degree of confidence that the
folks on the other end will get them unscrambled (I can produce slashed
Ostgardrian O's all I want, but most people don't get them!), we
compromise. We willingly and knowingly deviate from the ideal or the
perfect in pursuit of what might be seen as a greater good, in this case
being understood.

One thing about compromises: they're all good for certain circumstances,
and no one compromise solution is intrinsically and universally better
than any other.
