SC - How do I get started?

According to my copy of _Webster's_, "autocrat" has the following meaning: "a
person (as a monarch) ruling with unlimited authority" and it's related
adjective, autocratic, can mean "despotic." Not the best kind of associations
to be making, AFAIC. It has connotations, in my modern mind, that associate it
with repressive, dictatorship-type governments. I admit out front that I lack
any knowledge of period usage for the word, although I have heard before that it
existed in period--so did other words, with meanings quite distinct from those
they now have. I would be interested to see more exact evidence! ;-)
