 gathering them. >>

At my first feast (Things That Could Be Begged, Borrowed or Stolen From the
King's Forest), a scavenger hunt was made for salad ingredients to augment
the bear (35 LB). Venison (a half deer), several rabbits, a squirrel, a
rattlesnake, several pigeons, and a package of unidentified 'game.' Found and
used were violet leaves and flowers, dandelions, birch buds, wild chives and
some raspberries.

The violets (leaves and flowers) were used in salads during period and
dandelions are an escape from garden varieties introduced from Europe in
colonial days. All in all it was a successful feast done with almost
exclusively donated items that I had no idea would be there until they
showed up. :-)

Yes, I took a chance and it worked out. Unfortunately my knowledge of period
cookery at the time consisted of the false stuff taught about it in cooking
schools and what I had read in Fabulous Feasts. Thankfully, everything was
delicious despite that. :-)

I think Stefan may have a better description of that feast which occurred 17
years ago in his Florethingy.
