I can believe that.
My dad used to take a jeep and trailer out when they were in the Ruhr
valley with collected trade goods and come back with fresh food...that
all the other dogrobbers missed. His secret was the german nany my
grandparents brought over for he and his brothers. He learned to speak
german...and was nice to the locals so they would trade with him before
the typical 'rude american' type GIs. Of course it was a bit awkward the
one time he went out for food and came back with a bunch of german
soldaten...
