Hmmm, now that is interesting. My father was an ATF agent for twenty years
from 1962 to 1982. Before that he was an undercover cop specialising in
illegal alcohol production. So far as I know, it has always been against
federal law not only to distill alcohol, but also to own distilling equipment
without a commercial license. I have often wondered if school chemistry labs
are somehow exempt or if they require a special license.
As for the notorious "200 gallons per year per person", that only applies to
brewing or wine making, not to distilled beverages.
