Just to throw a couple of pence in,....

I had a discussion with one of my wine distributor salesmen. The topic
was a guest who was also a California winemaker who thought our house
wine (an Italian Salice Salentino Riserva) was "disgusting" and
"terrible." Odd for a wine that Wine Spectator gave a score in the high
80s. The opinion that Ron gave was that California university trained
winemakers use _very_ clean, sterile techniques resulting in very
simple, unidimensional, and uncomplex wines. In contrast, in Europe,
there is frequently a little cross contamination with local yeasts that
make the wines not only unique to their region, but add additional
characteristics to the wine.
