i haven't written the list since suscribing, and i am merely a young
woman who loves the art of cooking. please understand that i would ask
your two-cents of the following:
excerpt from a fictional account of young cleopatra, Cleopatra VII,
Daughter of the Nile Egypt 57 B.C.
" The cook put ground meat onto a plate. Several small bowls on a
sideboard held salt and other spices. He pinched some of each, then
added a fistful of pine nuts to the meat, mixing it together with his
hands. Then he patted the meat into two flat disks, each the size of his
palm.
"from a jar he poured olive oil into a pan that was heating on the coals.
The oil spit when he dropped in the meat, then began sizzling.... I
asked what our meal was called. It had tasted so good. 'The usual', she
said, 'fried dormouse.' "
question 1--- did they actually have an equivelent to hamburgers?! or is
this just writer's license?
now, in my celtic cookbook, a good number of the recipes have potatoes in
them...can turnips be substituted? For example,
Poacher's Pie
1 bay leaf
6-10 bacon slices
1 pound wild mushrooms
2 leeks, chopped into 1-inch pieces
1 rabbit, cut into small portions
salt and pepper to taste
3 tbsp. parsley, chopped
3 potatoes, peeled and sliced <---
1 tbsp red wine vinegar

place bay leaf on bottom of an ovenproof dish that has a cover. place
half the bacon over the bay leaf and cover with half the mushrooms and
half the leeks. place rabbit pieces on top of the vegetables and cover
with remaining mushrooms and leeks. season with salt and pepper and
sprinkle on half of the chopped parsley. place the potatoes over
everything so that all is completely covered. add a little more salt and
pepper and the remaining parsley. place the rest of the bacon slices on
top and pour the vinegar over the. put on a tight lid and cook for
appox. 2 hour at 325 degrees. try not to check too often as the lid will
seal in the natural juices.

thank you kindly for any thoughts you wish to share...
