There is a white flowered gourd known today as the 'bushel basket gourd' 
which is edible until quite large. This could be viewed as likely candidate 
for 'pumpkin' and certainly looks very similar to the New World plant which 
was subsequently also called a pumpkin. I have no facts to support my 
hypothesis though.
