In the very best Heinlein tradition, I've always felt that one of the
requisites for graduating from college should be that you kill and eat
something warm-blooded. (I'd suggest a member of the university
administration, but they're all cold blooded.) I don't have a problem with
people being carnivores, but I think they need to accept the karmic
responsibility of that which lies on the end of their forks. All too many
people think that meat is something that antiseptically appears in
cellophane wrappers, and that's a form of moral cowardice that I find rather
contemptible.
If you want to be vegan, fine, but we all need to accept the burden and
gift of our ancestors, who went to all the time and effort to subjugate wild
animals for us to eat safely, bred them to meet our requirements, and were
kind enough to kill off all the predators who might challenge us for the top
spot on the food pyramid. The primary law of man is this: nothing preys on
man with impunity.
