Found a website that outlines the difference.

I'm beginning to think that the sweet potatoes at the grocery store 
are sweet potatoes and the yams they sell are........sweet 
potatoes.  They do have lighter flesh, more a yellowish white rather 
than orange, but that's the only difference.  They otherwise look 
nothing like described at this site.
