Peanuts originate in southern Brazil and were spread by the Portuguese, who
had very little dealings with North America.  They probably came to North
America as provisions for the African slaves and may have been left with the
purchasers to help clear the ship.  

No matter how they got to North America, IIRC, Thomas Jefferson has been
credited with introducing peanuts to American agriculture.
