There are advantages to being a barony, even a small one (minimum numbers
in the West are 25). One is being able to give your own awards, which
requires a landed person to do. Although we gave awards when we were a
shire and then a province, we were so far away we didn't know until later
that we weren't supposed to. And even a small barony gains from having a
person or couple to revolve around and speak for them.

However, it does mean that when it comes to events like feasts, where the
expenses are higher, we need to have everyone paying. If we waive the
cook(s) and the servers, we've waived practically everyone. We view it as a
working event, just like any other, except that the goal is to prepare and
eat some really good food. All participate: cooking, serving, entertaining,
setting up and cleanup, each to their strengths and abilities. It's how
small groups must approach events in general if they are to survive. It
doesn't take too many spectators to bankrupt a small group, both
financially and spiritually.

I'll step off my soapbox now and head for the Rock. Haven't been there for
awhile....
