This, I can comment on.  My partner was macrobiotic,
and uses both of these.  I don't know if the Health
Dept. would deem them safe, but I know she has hers
for a good 3 years or more, and they have not turned,
and she uses them from time to time with no adverse
reactions.

She also uses the powdered version of the barley malt,
which I would assume would last even longer if kept in
an airtight container.
