Iron content darkens or shades colours to an earthtone range.  As little
as some people like to drink Pennsic water, it plays merry Hades with dye
colours!   The term is (speciously, *I* think) often attributed to
Pilgrims and Puritans.  I think it has more to do with overdying to make
mourning clothes.
