Visitors to New York frequently have that reaction ;-). On the automat
thing, I did a bit of research and determined that Horn & Hardart
converted their last New York City automats into Burger King franchises
in the 1970's, _but_ that the last automat in New York closed its doors
in 1991. As I say, I remembered that place; I used to work near it at
42nd and Lexington, and it was alive and more or less well. It never
occurred to me, though, that it wasn't a Horn & Hardart automat.

They do that. They think they're being helpful. These are the same people that try to convince you that you really want your tournedos well done. More to be pitied than censured.
