Just returned home from TLoftRings and the
school holiday parties, so it's been hours since
doing e-mail. regarding this question asked this am:
A woman's work is never done :a history of housework
in the British Isles 1650-1950 by Caroline Davidson.
U.K. hardback in 1982; paperback in 1986. There is also
a reference to the subtitle being A Woman's work is
never done : a sociology of housework in the British
Isles, l650-1950. roughly 250 pages. well illustrated.
Caroline Davidson is Alan Davidson's daughter and concurrent
with her work on the kitchen at Ham House, she did
this work on housewives and their labours through
the ages from cooking to washing to cleaning etc. If
you are into women's history, it's a great book. Slightly
beyond the 1600 mark, but still within reason for
the early mentions. Makes one glad to have a Maytag and
microwave. I had hoped that The Tudor Housewife by Sims
would be able to cover the period 1485-1650 in the same
vein. She didn't do nearly as good a job.
Hope this answers the question.
