Peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) originate in the highland region between Brazil
and Bolivia.  They were introduced into Africa by the Portuguese.

The Benin or Guinea groundnut, which is a completely separate species, is of
West African origin, but it probably never made it into Europe in period.
