I believe our eating habits are set in childhood. I was raised in town by
farm kids. From an early age I knew the meat we ate was once alive. Over
the years I have helped butcher many different kinds of animals. I can't
understand the folks who have problems knowing a chicken is fresh killed,
or processed and put in a little plastic bag. I've had friends look at me
in horror when I say something about butchering. I've always tried to see
the animals were killed as humanely as possible and processed quickly so as
not to waste any part of their gift. I learned to hunt and handle a gun
well, so as not to leave any wounded animals. I also refuse to kill what I
won't eat. Hunting for "sport" doesn't interest me. As an adult, I taste
everything, and try not to be prejudiced against some dish - except
turnips. I still haven't developed a taste for them.
