My German Grandma always added onion and fried in a
little sweet butter 
as 
well to lessen the salt content. Does anyone else do
this??

 Sometimes I do this as well as apples and some spices
(cumin and hot paprika).  IT's a thing I picked up
when we lived over there. Par boiled  potatoes make a
good addition too.Kraut isn't just kraut over there.  Nisha
