Condiments and fruit would be "too OOP"???  Do we even have a period recipe 
for Beef Barley Stew????  Or honey butter???

I agree, it's boring.  I've used Pies of Paris as dayboard before, quite 
successfully, and they are as good cold as hot if you don't have oven space 
at the site.
If he wants soup, there are plenty of good pottage recipes, and Rapes in 
Pottage made with vegetarian broth is usually a hit with the vegetarians.  
Heck, it was a hit witht he mundanes I served it to a few weeks ago!  Ember 
Day Tarts also are good cold, if your vegetarians eat eggs.
