Yes, I know that there were other uses, particularly in period.  But, given where
I grew up...and the fact that my father collected 6 bushel baskets full of quart
Mason jars (preferred containers for "moonshine") from the property where he built
our house...seeing the term in this context sort of struck my "funny bone".
