A quick plug in of Gum Tragacanth to dogpile.com came up with this cake
decorating source:

They have a gum tragacanth substitute as well, but if you look further down
their list the original is still there for sale. Is this what we are
looking for?

I also vaguely remember that it may be used as a binder-type thang
in painting? when you're mixing your own oils, and perhaps as a similar
item for those who make their own pigments for illuminations. . .
Check really, really good art supply stores.
