Urban myths notwithstanding, prunes _are_ plums, just as greengages are
plums, President plums are plums, damsons are plums, bullaces are plums,
sloes are plums, etc.

Prunes, if I'm not mistaken, come from Italy, or at least ended up here
via Italian immigrants.

In countries where prunes are not grown and are not available fresh (for
example, medieval and renaissance England), "prunes" have come to be
equated with "dried prunes", since that is the form in which they are
most often available.

All prunes are plums. Not all plums are prunes. Dried plums are dried
plums, unless, of course, they are prunes. In which case, they are...
prunes ; ) .
