    YUMMY
A Carmel, Ind., girl's recipe for Flaky Apple Pecan Torte has won her
the $25,000 Grand Prize in the first-ever Pillsbury Kids' Bake-Off Contest.
The competition for kids honored America's next generation of cooks and
their culinary skills. In addition to the cash prize, Christine Latta, 11,
won a GE Advantium-120 oven.
Latta competed in the national finals -- held Monday in Orlando, Fla. --
against 32 other young cooks, ages nine to 14, who'd also taken first place
at local Pillsbury Kids' Bake-Off Contests around the country. Recipes were
judged on taste, appearance, preparation and creativity by a team of
independent food experts. The winners were announced at a special awards
ceremony hosted by "The View" co-host Lisa Ling.
    Other winners included:
-- Michael Repanshek, 12, of Roswell, Ga., who won the First Place prize
of $10,000 with his recipe for Orange Chip Chicken.
-- Kevin Berard, 11, of Virginia Beach, Va., won one of the Second Place
prizes of $5,000 with his recipe for Mini Chicken Pot Pies.
-- Nina Lawson, 10, of Idaho Falls, Ida., won one of the Second Place
prizes of $5,000 with her recipe for Chocolate Crescent Mufflers.
-- Alyssa Rehart, 9, won one of the Second Place prizes of $5,000 with
her recipe for Smoked Salmon and Asparagus Quiche.
All 33 finalists received their own GE compact microwave oven and
refrigerator.
