According to the OED online (new toy) one of the cross-definitions for
bray is bruise. The spelling of 'brysse' probably became 'braise'
which could well have become 'bray'
---Bruise: 4. To beat small, pound, crush, bray, grind down.
ref: c1420 Liber Cocorum (1862) 45 if thay [peas] ben harde..Brysse
hom or strene hom. 1523 FITZHERB. Husb. §59 Take that grasse, and
broyse it a lyttell in a morter. ----
Just MHO, but it seems like a logical progression.
