Standard issue were hob-nailed seven-league sandals, which made the Romans
the envy of infantrymen everywhere, but led to the common complaint of sore
feet. If you don't accept this one, try the next paragraph.

The Roman pace was two strides, being measured from where the left foot
began to where the left foot ended. Based on the Roman foot and a pace of 5
feet, a Roman mile should be about 4,856 U.S. feet, but measurement of Roman
milestones makes it very close to 5,000 U.S. feet. So the Roman march step
was about 2.5 U.S. feet, and Roman march pace was about 5 U.S. feet.
