Sorry, didn't see this before, only just got up and have yet to finish my
first cuppa for the day. =)
That would have been probably a sweet potato.  A friend of mine in Japan
assures me that particular type of potato was used in dishes and Kaiseki Ryori.
I'd like to see what the original name was however before I can give any
assurance.
