re: saffron most of the saffron you get in the grocery store is over a year old. its dried out and lost much of its wonderful volatile fragrance. Fresh stuff is moist and you can smell it through the plastic bag :). try getting some of the new crop from your favorite spicer. Francesco or Worldspice can both do ya :). good luck! --Anne-Marie
