Good heavens. Misplaced cultural icons. The Green Lantern is another guy
from comic books; his current incarnation is that he has a ring which
can create various electromagnetic radiation, assorted force vectors,
and, effectively, temporary matter in any shape he wishes. It is powered
by an actual green lantern, provided by friendly aliens in the form of
the previous Green Lantern for this part of the galaxy. See E.E. Smith's
"Lensman" stories for the basic concept of a bunch of supercops spanning
the galaxy with pseudo-magical tools.

The Green Lantern is kewl because the artists can have a field day
creating stuff for GL to create to solve various problems. I liked the
giant green lawn mower they included in his battle with Sinestro
(naturally, a renegade ex-Green Lantern... egads!) for a recent cartoon
version.
