Author James Lileks has made it his life's work to unearth the worst
recipes and food photography from a library's worth of retro
cookbooks. His McSweeney's-meets-The Joy of Cooking approach to "The
Gallery of Regrettable Food" proves to be highly entertaining, but
be warned, you will be more inspired to skip dinner rather than
submit to any of the offerings contained within. Chapter titles like
"Cooking with 7UP" and "Glop in a Pot!" should say enough, but
you'll also find centerfold-like layouts of bizarre, quivering
foodstuffs sprung from aspic molds and a grainy black-and-white shot
of something determined to be "a chicken loaf of some sort." Dig in!
