Phillipa-
I've found that darned Iceberg lettuce browns within days no matter how
air-tight I store it!  I try to buy leaf lettuce instead of the head stuff
to keep it longer.  I've also found the "wild field" type lettuce keeps much
longer - stuff like escarole and endive.

Of course, nothing is as good as growing it just outside your kitchen.  It
doesn't spoil when you can just pop out the door and cut it as you need!
