>From a letter by Robert of Arbrissel, an itinerant preacher, founder of
Fontevrault, b. c. 1047 at Arbrissel (now Arbressec) near Rhétiers,
Brittany; d. at Orsan, probably 1117, to Ermengarde of Anjou.

Robert is talking about not fasting too rigorously, since he sees no moral
virtue in vegetarianism of itself.

"Discretionem tene in omnibus, in abstinentia, in jejuniis, in viglliis, in
orationibus. ... Non est seductus primus per delectabiles cibos, sed per
fructum arboris. Esau per esum lenticulæ perdidit primogenita, non per esum
gallinæ. ...Esca et potus non est regnum Dei, sed gratia et pax."

"Keep to moderation in all things, in abstinence, in fasting, in vigils and
in prayer. ... Our First Father was not seduced by a lavish meal but by a
fruit from a tree. Esau gave up his birthright for a bowl of lentils, not
for a cooked chicken. ...The Kingdom of God is not made up of food and
drink, but of grace and peace."
