Hmmm, I note Misha leaves off a few points.  The defenders of "the Shrine of
Texas Freedom," the Alamo, violated their orders to destroy the place and
tried to defend it instead.  The Louisiana "Volunteers" who joined Houston
were armed and dressed like U.S. regulars.  Little things like that.

In any event, Texas became a republic in 1836 (Sam Houston was sworn in as
President on October 22nd) and, on December 29, 1845, became the 28th state
of the United States.  Said annexation was one of the triggers of the
Mexican War.  It was during the tenure of Andrew Jackson, a friend of
Houston's.
