Sterno cans get very hot, es[pecially as they get close to the bottom.  A can of sterno burning wide open can bring the water in a food service warming tray to a rolling boil.  If it is in contact with table top or cloth, it can scorch the material.

If you don't have one of the sterno containers with the lid for adjusting and shutting off the flame that also sets high enough to put an air gap between the sterno and the table. I would suggest looking for another heat source.
