Broom's formal name in the Middle Ages was "planta genista."  Geoffrey (IV)
of Anjou used broom attached to his helmet so he could be identified in
battle by his followers and adopted the name Geoffrey Plantagenet.  In 1128,
he married Matilda, daughter of Henry I of England and their descendents are
the Plantagenets of England.
