Anyone remember the classic Twilight Zone episode? Based on a (much better)
story by, I think, Damon Knight.

I don't remember if it was Damon Knight, but I saw the episode, and have
read the story. And yes, I occasionally date myself, too. I saw the original
Star Trek TV shows - I was a mere infant, of course. My mom didn't like me
to watch "Twilight Zone" or "Outer Limits" because they gave me nightmares.

Well, I've only seen the TZ episode in reruns. And ST went off the air seven
months before I was born. Watched it in syndication as a kid though - every
Saturday night at 6. :-)
