Like Olwen said--don't bother with the stuff in the tubes. It's full of
preservatives and stuff, and isn't as nice to work with. Make your own.

You can use clay and Play-Do modeling tools, or you can purchase the
somewhat pricey kits that Wilton has for doing gum paste flowers, or you
can just use your fingers and whatever else you have lying around
(popsicle sticks, forks, knives, spoons, citrus peelers, zesters, graters,
etc.). You don't need expensive toys to play with marzipan.

For colors, you can use the liquid stuff you buy in the grocery store, or
the gel, paste, or powder colors that are sold for cake icing, or period
colorants like saunders and saffron. Remember that most, if not all, of
the synthetic stuff will stain your hands.
