A little earlier, but there's a Classic tale of Achilles being dressed
up as a maiden (by his protective mother?) to keep Odysseus from taking
him to war. Since he was quiet the good looking kid, he blended quite
well. Until Odysseus threw down a bunch of jewelry, combs, and
mirrors.....and one fine sword. One of the maidens was a little too
interested in the sword....

There was an imprisoned noble who escaped from the Tower of London
disquised as his wife's maid (she had come visiting with maid attending).

I know, at least in the later Renaissance/Elizabethan period, males
played female parts in the theatre, since the business of theatre was
too 'immoral' for women.

But I agree that most of the time, women are dressing as men to utilize
the better social standing and abilities of being a man. Seems men dress
as women either to escape capture or to get in to some place (like a
ladies chamber.)

Meaning when a rooster needs to pass itself off as a young hen, he's
probably already in hot water..... (okay, that was my attempt at food
content)
